Injuries. The bane of athletes and sports fans everywhere, injuries are the terrible and inevitable cost of doing business for athletes. When an athlete steps on the field, the threat of missing substantial time is always just a snap, a pitch or a play away.

As a sports editor for Hometown Media, I’ve seen injuries affect teams in different ways. Sometimes, believe it or not, it’s for the positive. For much of the 2010 season, the Bronxville football team went into battle without their best defensive player, Kieran Borcich, who had been struggling with injuries during the preseason. A formidable presence on the defensive line, Borcich was missed, but the rest of line stepped up in his absence to shutdown opposing defenses. When he returned just after mid-season, his line-mates were already confident in their own abilities and his addition put them over the top. They had been an impressive unit anyway, but the return of Borcich made them unstoppable, one of the finest frontlines Section I has ever seen.

When thousands of little wheel-shaped pieces of plastic escaped the Mamaroneck Sewer Treatment Plant and began washing up on beaches along the Sound Shore last year, the mess created more problems than annoyance for beach-goers: A delay in construction at the plant now has the county pressed for time to complete an upgrade by year’s end or face fines from the state.
