Five faces to watch
as the wrestling
postseason heats up

Andrew Planamento-Harrison (103 lbs.)
The Harrison standout has wins at both New Rochelle’s Shoreline and the Scarsdale Tournaments, and has only one in-section loss—a 3-0 decision to Sam Spina, the Fox Lane 103-pounder who took fifth at states last year.

In years past, Planamento’s Achilles heel has been his health. If he isn’t too banged up, however, it wouldn’t surprise many to see Planamento taking the mat with a section crown on the line.

Graham Zahringer - Rye (152 lbs.)
Zahringer, a seasoned veteran who has been wrestling for six years, has compiled a stellar 28-3 on the year. He earned a first-place finish at Rye’s Bernie Miller Tournament and was undefeated until late January.

A fourth-place finish at divisionals last season propelled Zahringer into the sectional tournament, and many believe he can once again make a push towards the later rounds of sectionals.

John White - Mamaroneck (125 lbs.)
The Mamaroneck junior has just three losses on the year, with only one of those defeats coming at the hands of an in-section opponent. White is a solid wrestler on his feet, but excels at the bottom position.

He will also benefit from a grueling 2008-09 season as a sophomore in which he wrestled top competition. “It didn’t matter where we were last year,” says Tigers coach Anthony Vitti. “He always seemed to get matched up with the other team’s best guy.”

Mike Figueroa - New Rochelle (130 lbs.)
After upsetting John Jay’s Henry Stauber at New Rochelle’s Shoreline Classic, Figueroa should surely be considered as a dark-horse to make some waves in the sectional tournament.

Figueroa has been the anchor of the Huguenot team all season long, and his win over Stauber proves Huguenots coach Jim Guccione’s belief that all it takes sometimes in these tournaments is getting hot at the right time.

Duke Alvora - Harrison (215 lbs.)
In what might be the most wide open weightclass in the section, it is understood that Alvora, a winner at the Scarsdale tournament, has as much chance as anyone to vie for a section crown.

Alvora, who currently sits at 33-5 on the year, credits working with smaller, quicker opponents this season for his increased win totals. His style has changed in the calendar year, and where 2009 saw him as more of a thrower, he has improved his athleticism and quickness to become a more well-rounded wrestler.
