Hurricane Earl By the time you read this, whatever Earl might inflict on us will have already happened. As I write this (Wednesday morning) the prediction is that Earl will pass well to the east of us, and our area will have just a damp and cloudy day on Friday, with heavy swells in the Sound. The Labor Day weekend has been saved! Given the reliability of forecasts, however, and that a hurricane’s path and strength are always subject to change, with Hurricane Fiona close behind, we are reviewing our emergency planning and preparing for problems. If the storms come close to us, our plans will be set. |

School’s Opening: Please Drive Carefully
It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and we are preparing for our children to go back to school. Children will be boarding buses and walking to and from school, some for the first time. Please exercise caution and patience on the roads as schools reopen this week. We will be out in force making sure that our children get to and from school safely. Make sure that you are doing your part to help keep our kids safe. I would like to provide you with a few key tips for a safe and citation-free transition back to school in our great town:

We don’t need our garbagemen signing a pledge, enforcing their commitment to collect our week’s trash. Probably don’t need an activist group calling on our postmen not to illegally read our mail. We don’t need a group calling for action to do your job the way you are generally expected to do it. That is, unless you’re a New York politician.

As the debate unfolds over whether a mosque should be allowed near the former World Trade Center site, we can be reminded of another, long ago question of limiting worship by members of a particular faith. The analogy might prove informative. It is said that those who ignore the lessons of history are bound to repeat past mistakes. |
